Suicide is one of the biggest known killers of individuals, the largest killer of Australians between 15-44 years of age. Suicide is set to double in less than 5 years worldwide by 2020. Eight people a day die of suicide in Australia, with more than 3,000 declared suicides a year – more than the road toll. Current efforts are not resulting in a reduction in the number and impact of suicide so something new has to be done.
Watch the following from ABC You Can’t Ask That if you want to understand something about the issue from those who have attempted suicide:

While there are many free crisis lines for suicide prevention, they rarely offer face-to-face or ongoing counselling of those who seek to end their lives due to the emotional pain that they feel. They are usually a single call that help the individual over an immediate crisis but what happens then. How can a person overcome the emotional pain they feel so that they can move forward with their lives and away from the edge of life?
I worked as a crisis line telephone counsellor and then moved to become a professional counsellor. But I found many professional counsellors were not comfortable or educated to deal effectively and practically with suicidal clients and those affected by suicide. And I find that many clients had issues of suicide but were not asked or comfortable in discussing their problems with an ordinary counsellor who did not specialise in the area. And they did not want to be just treated as a risk assessment but rather as a living and breathing human who was hurting and wanted to talk and help through their pain – not just the subject of a tick and flick risk matrix.
So I interviewed counsellors and crisis line telephone counsellors, studied and completed a Master of Counselling and decided I wanted to do something practical to help those who suffer from emotional pain but need more than crisis line services and a focus on suicide and the issues surrounding it.
I have set up a business model designed to provide people with the opportunity to explore their emotional pain and seek ways to overcome the pain rather than seek to end their lives.
Even one life saved has value and yet so many people do not know where they can go for specific suicide counselling services.
Suicide is preventable, but it requires resources, and so a business will enable resources to be applied to counselling people in need.
Many individuals who experience issues of suicide just don’t have the financial means to pay for their own counselling sessions, but you can help in a practical and tangible way.
Any donations will be poured into the business, either by paying for someone to have counselling sessions so that it is not a cost to them or to increase the resources and staff to assist more clients on a continuing basis and find ways to help counsel more people.
Perks- the opportunity to help save someone’s life, isn’t that reward enough? But you are also helping to send a message, that people’s lives are important and valuable, and you care about them enough to help them obtain support through professional counselling.
